Serial changes from the book to the tv show

Post image of Vampire Diaries Serial Changes From the Novels

The television series has changed many things in adapting the novels to screen. Some minor changes include characters’ last names being changed and their relationships to each other somewhat altered. Some major changes include renaming the town the story is set in. Fell’s Church was changed to Mystic Falls, as producers were unable to get legal clearance for the name. Also, Jeremy Gilbert, Elena’s younger brother, is not a character in the novels (Elena instead has a little sister named Margaret). Similarly, the character of Jenna Sommers, Elena’s aunt, was originally named Judith Gilbert in the novels. The character of Bonnie in the novels was a red head and a descendant to the Druids, in the TV series she appears African-American and is a descendant of the Salem witches. Also Vicki and Matt are brother and sister in the TV series but aren’t in the novels.

Both Damon’s and Stefan’s back stories have also been changed. Instead of hailing from Renaissance Italy, Stefan and Damon appear to be from Civil War-era Mystic Falls. Another addition is Zach, Stefan and Damon’s human relative, as this character never appeared in the novels. Also, in the novels, Elena is described as a blonde, blue-eyed, “ice princess”, whereas in the show she is a brown-eyed brunette. In the books, Caroline is also depicted as an “Egyptian Princess”, where in the show she has blonde hair and blue eyes. Elena’s other best friend Meredith from the novel is not in the TV series. However, it has been hinted that she will eventually appear.

Halloween!

Here’s an adorable shot of Nina Dobrev (Willy Wonka), Katerina Graham (Vampire), Kayla Ewell (Pirate) and Sara Canning (Sally, Night Before Christmas) all dressed up for Heidi Klum’s 10th Annual Halloween Party courtesy of Vampire Diaries Show. You can check out the rest HERE.

Paul Wesley interview

"I hate to admit this," Paul Wesley says, "but I've never really owned a TV." It's quite a confession, given that the actor's appeared in more than two dozen small-screen series, including 24, The O.C., and C.S.I. "I've had cameos on some cool shows," he says. "But it's nice to now be doing something that I'm involved in from the beginning."
He's talking, of course, about The Vampire Diaries--the new CW drama based on L.J. Smith's bestselling books. Starring as sensitive vampire Stefan Salvatore, Paul's a natural on camera, but getting into character was challenging: "I'm 150 years old but trapped in a teenager's body, I have these supernatural abilities, and whenever my hormones go out of whack"--like, for example, when he sees his love interest, Elena (Nina Dobrev)--"my eyes turn bloodred, and I get all pale and veiny." He could, however, relate to Stefan's reclusiveness: "I wasn't some weird loner in school, but I definitely wasn't invited to any of the cool parties," the New Jersey native, who started missing classes after he was cast on a soap opera sophomore year, says. "Girls didn't like me that much--I didn't even go to my prom."

Paul didn't just draw from his own experience; he also did his research. "The minute I was cast, I plowed through all the books." And he made a point of not reading or watching Twilight. "I didn't want to be influenced by it at all," he says. But the other bloodsuckers were hard to avoid: New Moon and The Vampire Diaries were both being shot in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, last April. "The cast was staying at our hotel--we saw them everywhere and hung out all the time. They're actually really nice people." And while critics have been quick to call the show a Twilight spin-off (though, for the record, Smith's books were written before Stephenie Meyer's), Paul, who recently relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, to continue filming, disagrees: "They have vampires and high school romance in common, but that's about it." --LINDSAY TALBOT

Kayla Ewell Talks Vicki and Vampire Diaries

Kayla Ewell, who plays Vicki of course, has a given a new interview where she talks of her character and the show.

She’s given this interview after Haunted, so I don’t want to write much here, because it is obviously very full of spoilers for those who don’t know what happens with Vicki.

So, you can read the interview behind the cut.

**SPOILER ALERT**

Vampire Diaries’ Kayla Ewell talks about Vicki dying & a possible return. Michael Ausiello over at EW recently interviewed Kayla Ewell who plays Vicki on the CW’s new hit show “Vampire Diaries.”

In an exclusive interview with them, she talked about when she first new that her character would be killed off the show, how she felt about it,filming alternate death scenes, and a possible return for Vicki.

First, she did confirm that Vicki is really dead by stating, ” Sadly, yes. It’s funny because I almost died four times on the show.”

Next, she talked about finally being able to tell her friends the truth about not currently working on the show, since she had to keep Vicki’s death a secret. She stated, “Yes. It’s a relief to finally be able to talk about it. People have been coming up to me in L.A. going, “Why aren’t you in Atlanta working on the show?” And I’m like, “Oh, I’m just here visiting my family. I had a couple of days off.” I’ve had to basically lie. But The CW and Warner Bros. wanted my death to be a big shock. And I think it will be.”

She revealed that she knew early on that Vicki would die. She stated, “I knew very early on. But knowing it and actually going through it are two completely different things. Seven episodes is a lot of time to bond with people. Being back in L.A. has been harder than I thought it would be because this job was more special to me than any other job I’ve ever done.”

She also said she knew that when she first signed on, that it would only be for seven episodes. She stated, Yes. Vicki’s death was something that needed to happen in order for Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) to go through a transformation.”

She talked about shooting her death scene, and how they had to reshoot it because of a change in script. She stated, “Funny story: In the original script, Jeremy kills Vicki. And that’s what we shot. Jeremy is forced to choose between saving the love of his life or his sister, and he chooses his sister. We shot the whole thing and I moved back to L.A. Then about a week and a half later, I got an e-mail from Kevin and coexecutive producer Julie Plec asking me to come back to Atlanta to reshoot my death scene, only this time Stefan kills me.

Finally, she gave a little insight on how a possible return for Vicki might be feasible in the future. She stated, “Anything can happen on a vampire show. Dying doesn’t necessarily mean that someone’s gone forever. In the original script, when Vicki gets staked you see her disappear into dust. But in the reshot scene that aired, Stefan pulls the stake out and Damon takes me away. So they left the ending open to interpretation.”

I was personally thinking that same think, too. I was actually thinking that they could say Stefan missed her heart,if they decided to bring her back in the future.

Mind control

Elena wants Jeremy to believe Vicki ran away and isn't coming back—so much so that she trusted the most untrustworthy of people (undead or alive) to make it happen. Did she make the right decision? Did she have a choice? Jeremy turned to drugs and alcohol when his parents died, and one can only imagine what Vicki's tragic end would do to him. So now Jeremy will think Vicki abandoned him and he may never know that his first love loved him back. If you were in Elena’s shoes, what would you have done?

R.I.P Vicki Donovan

We haven't been turned into vampires (yet), so we don't know what Vicki was going through, but we can imagine that the transformation wasn't easy. She wasn't even ready to go out in public, so should she really have had to pay for attacking Elena with her own life? And what about poor Matt and Jeremy? They'd been through so much already. Now they're suffering another loss. The world may be better off with one less chronically bad girl, but we'll still miss Vicki. Here's hoping eveyone's favorite twice-dead girl rests in peace. Do tell us, though, do you think she got what she deserved?

Love or hate

On The Vampire Diaries, it’s good brother versus evil brother. Sometimes it seems like evil has more fun, and with Ian Somerholder’s hot portrayal of Damon, it’s hard not to cheer for the bad guy. But then he goes ahead and tries to kill Caroline and Vicki? It’s a tough call—do you love Damon? Hate him? Or just love to hate him?

Season 1 episode 8 - 162 candles

On his birthday, Stefan (Paul Wesley) is surprised by a visit from Lexi, (guest star Arielle Kebble, "Gilmore Girls"), one of his oldest friends. Still upset by the events at the Halloween haunted house, Elena (Nina Dobrev) does her best to stay away from Stefan, but Lexi gives her some unsolicited relationship advice. Elena and Jenna (Sara Canning) are surprised by a change in Jeremy's (Steven R. McQueen) behavior. At Damon's (Ian Somerhalder) insistence, Caroline (Candice Accola) tries to get his medallion back from Bonnie (Katerina Graham). Finally, Damon's offer to help Sheriff Forbes (guest star Marguerite MacIntyre) has sudden and tragic results.

Vampire Wars: Who’s the Best Evil (Yet Hot) Vampire? – Vote Damon!!

"Vampire Wars continues! As we explained earlier this week, we’ve decided that, structurally speaking, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, True Blood and The Vampire Diaries are all the same show. Girl meets soft-hearted vampire, girl enters bizarre world of the occult, girl gets mixed up in some stuff, girl hooks up with hard-bodied other vampire, wackiness (and bloody good scandal) ensues.
But which of those wicked, supersexy vamps is the best? It’s time to decide who’s the best evil (yet hot) TV series vampire, and you have to make the nearly impossible choice between James Marsters‘ bitingly funny Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Alex Skarsgård’s Viking vampire Eric Northman on True Blood, and Ian Somerhalder’s devilish Damon on The Vampire Diaries.

So…who do you love? Tell us in the poll below!"

Damon need you!! Vote For him!

Six Clues That Your Boyfriend is a Vampire

After five painfully long episodes of The Vampire Diaries, Elena Gilbert finally grew a brain and realized there's something off about her boyfriend Stefan Salvatore: he's a vampire. It was one of those classic "No duh" TV moments, but also quite cool because it means the show can stop being about secrets and lies and start being about kick-ass vampires and the women who love them.

But why did it take Elena so long to figure out that Stefan is undead. Didn't she realize the title of her show is The Vampire Diaries? Perhaps it was just a lack of general awareness. So to help prevent any women from suffering Elena's fate, here are six simple clues that the man you're dating is actually a vampire.

1. He's Never Sick

If your man is a jock who never gets injured, and if he can recover from a deep cut within seconds, something is definitely off. Either you're dating Claire from Heroes (I hear she kisses girls now) or your boyfriend could be a vampire.

2. He's Obsessed With Jewelry

This is a tricky clue, because there are many different interpretations of guys who wear a lot of jewelry. If it's gaudy gold chains and pinky rings, he might be an Italian mobster. If it's sparkly or he coordinates the jewelry with his outfits, he's probably gay. But if his jewelry is all really old, hideous and has ancient symbolic meaning, he's a vampire. Warning: Some boyfriends can be more than one of these three options.

3. He Has Senior Citizen Friends

For the most part, teenage boys aren't friends with old people. They play their music way too loud and won't stop riding their damn skating boards. So if your boyfriend seems to know more than his fair share of senior citizens, and if they know him, he could be a vampire.

4. His Family is Dead (or Evil)

Vampires typically don't have families, so if your boyfriend claims that everyone in his family is gone and he's all alone, it means either he's ashamed of you or he's a vampire. The one exception to this rule is that, if he does have some family, find out how evil they are. If the only family member your boyfriend stays in contact with is a heartless, evil dude, you have to wonder why he's even still talking to this relative.

5. He Only Gives Vague Non-Answers

When you ask your boyfriend questions, does he tell you the truth, or does he give vague answers about knowing someone, but then something happened and now he's here? And even when he claims to be straightforward, does he only provide surface details like his favorite movie while ignoring anything about his actual personal life or backstory? If so, then odds are he's a vampire.

6. Are People Being Bitten in Your Town?

If you've answered yes to any of the five clues above, you're boyfriend might be a vampire. But how can you know for sure? Well, take a look around your town. Are there suddenly a lot of unexplained deaths or wild animal attacks? And do you personally know someone who claims she was bitten by a vampire? I'd say that's a pretty good sign that there's probably a vampire in your town, and it sounds like your boyfriend might fit the description.

If The Vampire Diaries' Elena Gilbert had listened to any of this advice, she wouldn't have wasted so much time on a guy who was obviously a vampire. Not only would she answer "Yes" to all of these questions, but back in episode 2 Matt told her that Vicki claimed she was bitten by a vampire.

The most important thing to remember about detecting vampire boyfriends is that everything you thought you knew about vampires should go out the window. Maybe they can walk in sunlight or eat garlic bread or you can see their reflection. None of those things are proof that your boyfriend is NOT a vampire.

So stay vigilant ladies and try to avoid dating any vampires. Unless they're really hot and can make chicken parmesan. Because, vampire or not, you can't do much better than that.

At a parent/teacher conference, Mr. Tanner (guest star Benjamin Ayres) makes Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning) feel that she is failing as a surrogate parent, especially when it comes to Jeremy. Elena (Nina Dobrev) decides to go to the Salvatore house to talk to Stefan, but finds his charming brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder) instead. Damon reveals surprising information about Stefan's past, and when Stefan arrives home, Elena is confused and embarrassed to realize that he isn't happy to see her there. Meanwhile, Vicki's memory of the attack begins to come back to her.

Four months after a tragic car accident killed their parents, 17-year-old Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev, "DeGrassi: The Next Generation") and her 15-year-old brother, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen, "Everwood"), are still adjusting to their new reality. Elena finds comfort with her best friend Bonnie (Katerina Graham, "17 Again"), frenemy Caroline (Candice Accola, "Juno"), and former boyfriend Matt (Zach Roerig, "Friday Night Lights"), but Jeremy is trying to figure out why Matt's sister, Vicki (Kayla Ewell, "The Bold and The Beautiful"), is suddenly rejecting him and hanging out with his rival, Tyler (Michael Trevino, "Cane"). Stefan and Elena are immediately drawn to one another, but Elena doesn't realize that Stefan is hiding a dark, deadly secret – the fact that he's a vampire. At a nighttime bonfire party, Elena and Stefan are getting to know each other when chaos erupts after Vicki is attacked and left bleeding from a savage bite to the neck. Fearing that he knows who is responsible for the attack, Stefan finds that his older brother, Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder, "Lost"), has returned to town. Now these two vampire brothers – one good, one evil – are at war for Elena's soul and for the souls of her friends, family and all the residents of Mystic Falls, Virginia.

The vampire diaries ?!?!?!?

Four months after the tragic car accident that killed their parents, 17-year-old Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev, "DeGrassi: The Next Generation") and her 15-year-old brother, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen, "Everwood"), are still adjusting to their new reality. Elena has always been the star student; beautiful, popular and involved with school and friends, but now she finds herself struggling to hide her grief from the world. Elena and Jeremy are now living with their cool-but-overwhelmed Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning, "Smallville"), who is doing her best to be a surrogate parent.

Elena manages to find some comfort with her familiar social circle – best friend Bonnie (Katerina Graham, "17 Again"), frenemy Caroline (Candice Accola, "Juno"), and former boyfriend Matt (Zach Roerig, "Friday Night Lights"), but Jeremy is on a more dangerous path, hanging out with the stoners and using drugs to hide his pain. Jeremy is also trying to figure out why Matt's sister, Vicki (Kayla Ewell, "The Bold and The Beautiful"), is suddenly rejecting him and hanging out with Jeremy's rival, Tyler (Michael Trevino, "Cane").

As the school year begins at Mystic Falls High, Elena and her friends are fascinated by a handsome and mysterious new student, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley, "Fallen"). Stefan and Elena are immediately drawn to one another, although Elena is puzzled by Stefan's increasingly bizarre behavior when he appears suddenly at the cemetery where her parents are buried. What she doesn't realize is that Stefan is hiding a dark, deadly secret of his own – the fact that he's a vampire. At a bonfire party the next night, Elena and Stefan are just getting to know each other when chaos erupts after Vicki is attacked and left bleeding from a savage bite to the neck.

Fearing that he knows who is responsible for the attack, Stefan returns home and finds his older brother, Damon (Ian Somerhalder, "Lost"), whom he hasn't seen for 15 years. Damon is also a vampire, and the two brothers have a long and bitter history. Damon ridicules Stefan for rejecting their legacy of violence and brutality, but he understands his brother's obsession with Elena, since she looks exactly like a woman Stefan loved more than a century ago; a woman that Damon tried to make his own. Now these two vampire brothers – one good, one evil – are at war for Elena's soul and for the souls of her friends, family and all the residents of Mystic Falls, Virginia.
